It was just the first chunk, and have a delay to add or delete word in the chunk. The screenshot showed the mode I used. I am wondering that is there any with conflict with other modes.

You can disable global-linum-mode to fix this.

I have also run into this error.

The error seems to occur when the last line of the file is ```. When the file ends on blank line (i.e. an additional newline after the end of the chunk), I no longer get the error.

I think a related issue is that whenever I start a new chunk, I'm no longer able to see the function signature in the minibuffer (a feature of ESS that I really like). I can avoid the issue by pasting in an entire chunk all at once and then typing in the middle; or, completing the chunk and then reopening the file.
