Thanks for your comments. I agree that the error reporting is a bit lacking, I've renamed your issue as I think that is the core of it.
Regarding Pie charts, I'd like to do that by separating the series and axis logic from the rendering logic and creating a circular renderer for the chart (as opposed to the rectangular one which is embedded across the library at the moment). Doing so would double the number of charts, creating some quite unusual ones in the process. It should as a by-product create pie-charts, radar charts etc. It's a nice idea, but it's going to be really really hard!

I have started to improve the error reporting. The particular input error you mention is now reported more helpfully but I'll leave the issue open as I need to improve them across the API.
