No plans for now. The object element is the only cross-browser solution, and the mobile space is incredibly fragmented.

If you use the static object code (not the JavaScript version), the object works fine in iOS. I'm not sure why the JS version doesn't work in iOS, I'll investigate when I have time.

I don't have any non-iOS mobile devices -- my Android phone was stolen a while back. :P

I think the problem is iPad Safari doesn't return "application/pdf" in navigator.mimeTypes, thus hasGeneric fails. This guy seems to have this figured out: http://www.pinlady.net/PluginDetect/PDFReader/, maybe pdf object can delegate the detection to it instead.

Almost three years have passed since this question was posed, it's definitely still relative. FWIW I'm looking into using <embed> now that it's officially supported in the HTML5 spec (and HTML5 is now official). For pure markup (no JS) I still recommend <object> since it provides a fallback mechanism.
