I think the problem is that for chars that are not in the current font, CTLine will fall back to a different font that has this char. We ignore this currently and always assume that all chars are in the same font. This also means that one line can have several runs: one run for each time the font must be switched.
Fixing this all should be possible, but is quite a lot of work, I guess. I'll look into it a bit more.
