In other words:

  1. Hibernate creates java.sql.Blob instance that contains some data and returns -1 for java.sql.Blob#length
  2. Then Hibernate calls PgPreparedStatement.setBlob(int i, Blob x)
  3. pgjdbc attempts to fetch the data out of this blob instance, and pgjdbc assumes the result of Blob#length is valid, so it fails down the line

As far as I understand, PreparedStatement.setBlob(int i, Blob x) does not impose explicit constraints on Blob instance.
Blob#length() does not clarify the possible return values.

We might probably add the edge case back and treat blobs with negative lengths as if it was Long.MAX_VALUE when it comes to setBlob. It would reduce the unwanted disruptions.

However, I think the practice of returning -1 for the length is invalid.

from pgjdbc.
