I've managed to track this down. The apiUrl should not actually point to the GraphQL API endpoint. Since it uses the Directus JS SDK under the hood, it's actually calling the REST API. So, in my example the apiUrl should be http://mysite.com. At run-time the project value will be appended to that URL.
So, not a bug in the plugin :) Perhaps a bit more explanation in the plugin documentation would be useful?
