I assume the difference is in the Jet oledb driver and the Ace oledb driver.
xls spreadsheets are read using the Jet driver, while xlsxx spreadsheets are read using the Ace driver.
Unfortunately there's really nothing I can do in the LinqToExcel code to fix this.
