Yes, it's probably due to Microsoft Office not being installed on the server. LinqToExcel uses Microsoft Access' Jet Engine database driver to query the spreadsheets. Without it installed, LinqToExcel won't work.

Thanks for the reply - I'm sorry if this is redundant - but do I fully need
MS Office installed? Or is the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010

I've downloaded and installed it - but am still receiving the error. If I
save the file as 97-2003 (.xls) it will (and has) work fine.

Not trying to be so "fix my server" - I'm just hoping something is
blatantly obvious to you that I'm overlooking.

I would think the redistributable would be enough, but since it didn't work for you, then I recommend installing ms office and see if that solves the issue.

LinqToExcel fails with external table format exception UNLESS I already have the spreadsheet open in excel
