That exit line was brought in as part of a patch - and I quickly realised it made things difficult. So, latest Riddle release (1.3.1) doesn't have it - but you'll still need to manually require 'riddle/0.9.9', ideally straight after you require 'riddle'.
If you're using Thinking Sphinx, then just set version: '0.9.9' in your sphinx.yml file for the appropriate environment, and you'll be fine.
