I also think it should be possible to pause directly from the navigation menu for several reasons:

  • Pausing navigation is genuinely useful and should be easy to do from the main navigation interface. For example, I temporarily pause my navigation at a short stop, to save battery or disable speech instructions, and resume later without having to re-enter the destination and re-calculate the route.
  • The notification actions and the navigation menu should be consistent. When the notification shows stop and pause, it is very strange for the navigation menu to show stop and resume; they should show the same.
  • It is very strange for an action to be available only through the hidden/secondary quick action menu and notification, but not through the program's main/primary interface. Every other quick action I can think of is a shortcut to an action already available through the main interface, and not the primary way of performing the action.

I also think that the navigation button actions should always be to bring the navigation to one of the two states that it is not currently in, just like playback controls in a video, and just like the notifications currently do:

State Action 1 Action 2
Resumed Pause Stop
Paused Resume Stop
Stopped - -

Right now, the navigation menu shows stop and resume when the navigation is resumed, giving the (wrong) impression that the navigation is currently paused.

As of now navigation can be paused using Quick actions menu or Android notifications bar (see https://docs.osmand.net/docs/user/navigation/setup/route-navigation/#pause--resume-navigation)
This problem was discussed in #17957
