The proxy setting is only for machines and containers. Like any other macOS app, OrbStack simply uses your default system-wide proxy for everything else.
What do you mean by "initializing VMs"? Machine creation does use the OrbStack-specific proxy setting.

The issue is common for other applications as well, all http requests need to be proxied via zScaler. Or else, they just fail silently, as public DNS queries are blocked completely from the internal DNS servers.from orbstack.

OrbStack requires a working DNS server on macOS. Requests will go through the configured proxy, but unfortunately working domain name resolution is a hard requirement that's not feasible to remove.
