I have fixed the issue adding a DWORD entry called SystemUsesLightTheme in the registry editor under "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize" and setting the value to 0.

Soon you wont have to do that any more. I am glad this fix works but do not recommend it to anyone just in case there are unintended consequences. I have not tested it but soon it will become unnecessary with the next release of GWSL. Again, this is only if you have this specific bug.

With the latest release (1.3.7) it also happens to me. I checked the registry and the key mentioned by @Luca-Prezzo is there, so it's probably something else now.

Did you have the alpha version before?

I had 1.3.6 from the windows store, uninstalled it and then installed 1.3.7 from github.

Only the github version is installed right now.

I released the 1.3.7 stable version. If you still want to try, I recommend uninstalling the old alpha GWSL first and deleting the GWSL folder in user/appdata/roaming.

Tried it with VLC, it works!
GIMP starts but after entering the editor it crashes.

I had the same problem with gimp. I think it is just some strange WSL incompatibility. I never looked into it because I already have GIMP on Windows. Edit: Gimp seems to work in GWSL single window mode but not multi window...
