Maurice – perhaps we could add a –pronom-only option?

Are the extensions all needed at the moment? In the past, there were some incorrect, too general, or very slow pronom signatures and the extensions corrected them prior to their being changed in pronom. It is also used to design new profiles.

Cheers,
Adam.

You are right, when I have delete the entry of the conf file, fido detect the fmt/189 Pronom puid, but on the website of PRONOM, the corresponding puid is the fmt/214 (although I've update signatures to v70).
I work on an archival software which need to obtain the correct puid and dont change over time. There is a way to make fido give only persistent puid?

@florianajir: this particular file format is quite complicated, will try and do my best.

@adam, good idea to add pronom-only option. The extension file contains some sigs which, for whatever reason, are not (yet) added to PRONOM.

@andy, will try that and if it works, commit it to the next release.

The fido-fmt/* PUIDs are "temporary" and live in "conf/format_extensions.xml". The reason for these non-PRONOM PUIDs is that sometimes there is no PUID available for a particular file-format, for example, because it has been submitted to PRONOM but not has been added (yet).

I am going to evaluate this particular FIDO PUID as it seems not to be complete. Additionaly, it seems PRONOM has updated the "official" PUID for xlsx files.

In the mean while please use the PRONOM Registry search for the mimetype:

the thing I don't understand is that this format (xlsx) was added to the pronom registry in 19 Apr 2012 so it must be in the droid signature file (see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/PRONOM/Format/proFormatSearch.aspx?status=detailReport&id=940)
I think fido first look into "conf/format_extensions.xml" and if he match a result, it don't look in pronom registry.
you can see at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/aboutapps/pronom/release-notes.xml (the fmt/214 : excel xlsx was added in v70)

You are right about the addition to PRONOM in 2012. However, when FIDO was created in 2010, there was no signature for this format, so it was added to the extensions file.

About the order of looking for signatures, it is the other way around.

The reason it does not resolve the correct PUID is that FIDO first loads the PRONOM PUIDs and then it loads the extension file. If there is an entry for an already loaded PRONOM PUID in the extension file, this overwrites the PRONOM PUID. In this case the PUIDs don't match, so the fido-fmt is an addition. However, the reason it matches the fido-fmt PUID has probably to do with the fact that the fido-fmt signature is "better" than the PRONOM one.

I am going to look into this, in the mean time, you can try and delete the fido-fmt entry from the extensions file (or comment it out) to test if it matches the PRONOM entry.

The fmt/214 is an in-container signature, and you are seeing fmt/189 with is the binary sig of the container format. I'm not sure of the status of Fido container signature support, but it doesn't seem to be working in this case. The 'right' solution may be to add the extension signatures back in but change the record from 'fmt/189.xl' to 'fmt/214'.
