A workaround is using virtualbox, installing a trial version of windows 10 enterprise (free), and opening the files in designspark installed in that.

If others encounter this issue and are wondering what is going on, from reading about the different software that handles PCB and schematic software it seems that just because these files share file extensions does not mean there is standardized formatting. Seems like the different software is encoding the data differently despite the file extensions so don't expect to be able to easily move schematics/pcbs between different software packages. Going forward using FOSS programs (when able re features) would be of benefit. Will close the bug.
