Closing as the main issue (mgmt of publishing of apps) has been implemented in IS. It's even called Apps!
The rest of the comments are improvements for the dashboard and should lead to issues there if there is still interest…

In terms of UX at installation I do not think it is important to distinguish whether a specific piece of content is dynamic or static as is the case currently.

Agreed.

It would be more relevant to select a language, and have the app appear alphabetically with the zim files and an appropriate descriptor or tag.

Yes, while we don't want users to have to be looking for those apps, we do need to:

  • clearly indicate what kind of content those are (can be a different tag in the card as you suggested) as it's very different from the rest: not web based, requires specific device and installation procedure.
  • allow users to filter content to find them. If you are building an image for people you know will be using android tablets, it makes sense to find out what android apps are available instead of browsing the thousands of content.

Once connected to the Kiwix-server I also think that rather than clicking on a box and be taken to a download page, one could directly click on the box and start the download.

Just to be clear, kiwix-serve will not serve any non-ZIM content. I suppose you are referring to the offspot homepage.
I agree with your suggestion though, as long as the UI is clear about what to expect. It's not trivial as offspot are often and frequently used by first-time users.

Writing this makes me realize there's an additional property to those apps: those are to-install tools. This means that it's a lab-kit convenience more than a learning tool. A single device would only click once on such a link. Once the device has it installed, it's consuming homepage space… Maybe we could separate installable content from live/web ones.

Well, my point is: UX should not be overlooked 😉
