The AUTO detect seems to be buggy at least on Linux (see bug #2). However, the correct serial control should list... What OS are you using? Can you access the printer from e.g. Printrun/Pronterface?
from octoprint.
I am running on Debian unstable (which is required to get python 2.7) the electronics is a RAMPS 1.4. The printer is working under pronterface. I have two printers one worked no problem the other didn't which just made no since. I was able to get both running(one at a time of course) as of about an hour ago by pressing the reset switch on the RAMPS once it was connected to the laptop. It looks like it might be an issue with the RAMPS board on the second printer.
As for the AUTO detect issue it works fine under Linux(with a working RAMPS) if the user account that launches Octoprint has correct permissions to control/access the USB subsystem.

Hm.. didn't help in getting the autodetect to work... in any case, do I read this correctly that the ticket can be closed as it's the RAMPS board's fault?

Three weeks, no answer, I take this as a yes ;)
