git submodule update --init --recursive
./autogen.sh
./configure --disable-shared
make

After a recursive clone, did you run configure in the tinydtls subdirectory?

I did a clone, git submodule update --init --recursive, then a autoreconf in the ext/tinydtls dir followed by ./configure and make.

@malinengineer and @obgm : Thanks for the quick help. It is building now an I can run the example server/client!
Note: This should probably be added as a brief note to the Readme for others who might wanna have a look into this.
