I noticed nvim-cmp has its own submodule, which accepts action and modes.

While a step up from LSP mappings, it means other stuff supported by keymaps (e.g. which-key description) can't be set.

I'm sure other plugins have their own unique ways of configuring keymaps...

Perhaps keymaps could use some unification & refactoring across the board?

EDIT: To clarify; although undocumented, LSP keymaps do support which-key descriptions, but I don't think nvim-cmp does. Although it's unlikely you'd actually want which-key while navigating completions.

I think unifying the keymaps would help a lot to make Nixvim more intuitive. I was surprised by how much the keymap schemas differed for different plugins.

Should I document this in a separate issue or is it better discussed here?
