I managed to capture raw HTTP response (via Fiddler) where cache was enabled and disabled for a "503 Service Unavailable" error was occurring for the upstream proxy:

Caching plugin enabled

HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable
Cache-Control: no-cache
Content-Type: text/html
Server: Caddy
X-Cache-Status: skip
Date: Thu, 03 Oct 2019 12:17:37 GMT
Content-Length: 336
