This has been suggested, and I think it's a great idea, but yeah, it's not a high priority. The way we talked about doing it at the hackathon here was to have a more general plotting window that could easily handle histograms, scatterplots (which @njvack is interested in), and time series. It will most likely also require a server-side component, because we don't want to be sending 4D images everywhere, so it's better to index into a voxel on the user's click (and so will be slightly less responsive). The actual server-side code would be left up to users to implement, so the viewer would just have to specify how to handle the result of a generic ajax request.
Anyway, the nice thing about this is that the data plot can in theory be completely independent from the rest of the viewer, so if you want to come up with a prototype that just takes a 1D or 2D array as input and plots it, plus adds I'm happy to integrate it into the viewer code.
