My stance on proof of work is that it can not only help in the traditional sense of preventing spam, but also can help show platforms like Twitter that messaging services can be profitable without advertisements. Thoughts on the idea that cryptocurrency mining is a viable option for a proof of work?

While the idea of proof of work as a way to generate revenue from users, I doubt most platforms that exist today will give up their business model of selling user metadata for use in advertising, research, and other realms. That said, perhaps it would be a better alternative to compensate the user for his / her data, after all he / she owns it, no? By making data open and enforcing a proof of work each time a request to download it is made, it would level the playing field between advertisers and researchers, as well as generate revenue for the service. Ideally, a portion of that revenue would go to the users whose data was collected, also serving as a way to indicate that their data has been "sold," a fact which many services today try to hide from their users. Thoughts?
