Ok, I disabled USE_TZ in settings.py and then it works.
Looks like I have to load some kind of timezone tables into mysql:

I'm closing the issue because it appears to be solely mysql related. If someone stumbles upon this and can tell me why things stopped working now after months without a complaint, I'd be glad to hear it!
