Actually it might have happened around Christmas as well - I don't know whether the trading window was open or not, but hypothetically speaking - when selling the stock on Wednesday, 27th of December 2017 you'd need the exchange rates from 26th.
26th is a public holiday, as is 25th, 24th is Sunday, 23rd Saturday so the last day with proper rates is Friday, 22nd. So it's 5 days back.

We could as well make it so the number of retries is unlimited, as far as we are getting 404, which is the expected HTTP status code to handle this situation.

We should not rely on an external service to return a proper 404 every time. A reasonably high number of retries should be used. Like 7 days :)

I agree, 404 is too generic. I'll set it to 7 days.
