Discord does not play notification sounds for the currently opened channel

That's what it does now. It used to play the message sound effect whenever I had a message in the channel I was in since that's what it does by default. Current Channel has its own unique sound effect thats different when it's enabled.

Yes it used to and that was incorrect

It now behaves the same as native discord without the plugin
