Argh, meant for this to be "enhancement", not "defect", but I'm afraid I don't
know
how to change things up :/ sorry!

Hi, no problem :) Thanks for the request. Yes, this feature is definitely
missing. It
is doable fairly quickly if all you want is just a kanji-english translation.
However,
if other information (such as stroke count, radicals etc) is to be displayed
the
implementation of the feature will take longer: this information is not part of
the
edict file, it is stored in the "kanjidic" file which has to be downloaded and
indexed.
Perhaps I should implement this quickly using the "edict" dictionary only, then
proceed to the full implementation using "kanjidic". What do you think?

it's up to you, developer! Depends how you feel about trashing code. If
you've ever heard of "Kotoba"
for iPhone, they have a nifty feature for kanji pages that shows how to write
them. That's a tough one
though ( no idea where they dug that up). Just radicals and perhaps indeces
for common Kanji
dictionaries would be awesome though! And if you could correlate vocab with
sentences from Jim Breen
you'd be a hero!

If a can tell my mind, kanji writing video are not that usefull and it will
slow
your android device. I found several on à website in mov-format but it was
heaven
and doesn't render that good ...
But adding kanjidic is a good idea.

Oh full videos of kanji writing is a waste. I meant more on the lines of a
24x24 gif where 1 frame = 1
stroke. But yeah, G! Is not very hardy for memory intensive things like that.

On the other hand, if you don't know how to do pattern recognition, I could
lend a habnd with that, but
I would need to do some research as to common techniques for kanji
classification.

Yeah, the kanji drawing search (like the KanjiPad) would definitely be nice,
however I
have no experience in this field - your help would be much appreciated! I tried
to
search for some OCR Java libraries but I couldn't find anything useful.
As for kanji drawing - hmm. Can you point me where to download such GIFs?

There's an open source japanese handwriting recognition engine named TOMOE
http://tomoe.sourceforge.jp/cgi-bin/en/blog/index.rb

after a quick search, i found several links :
a utility i used on palm : http://www.wellscs.com/pilot/index.htm
you already know this one, but readers may not :
http://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/#wince_r
the well-known kanjipad : http://fishsoup.net/software/kanjipad/
another one, lamerpad : http://www.debian.org.hk/~ypwong/lamerpad.html
http://chasen.org/~taku/software/ajax/hwr/
and else :

I hope this will help ...

Most common techniques for kanji recognition are heavily reliant on stroke
order and angle
correctness. Apparently, general kanji reading recognition is a generally
unsolved problem due to how
many there are.

I don't have much time immediately, but I would love to lend a hand as mid
December draws around.

There is too much going on in this issue, I have split this issue into Issue
15, Issue
16 and Issue 17. Closing this bug as duplicate.
