I like the slide down effect, but testing it is very jumpy. I made a movie of the behavior I was seeing.
If we cant replicate the nav on the sandstone site I am starting to think we may have to go super simple. Maybe the only way to expand a section you are not is is by clicking the other section and doing a page load?

Removed the attempts to shoehorn a similar sandstone menu interactivity due to differences in IA and how that impacts the implementation. Left nav simplified to render full branch for the node you are viewing.

I think this is OK. it is much simpler but it does what I expect and I am not confused when using it.. very predictable behavior. resolving this one.
