This issue was because the for the tinymce plugin for the image insert tool utilized Mezzanine's static_proxy view, which was using the wrong protocol due to the request.is_secure() method returning False due to the load balancer terminating the SSL and talking http back to nginx and in turn to django. Configured nginx to set the X-Forwarded-Protocol header to 'https' and added SECURE_PROXY_SSL_HEADER = ('HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTOCOL', 'https') to project/settings/local.py

The image insert tool is now working on dev, but I want to do some further research on what headers are being sent by the load balancer and see if I can configure nginx to pass that through to django before implementing this fix on prod.
