That is correct, by default, idle will halt pinging when the user goes into idle state, and will resume when the idle state ends. The reasoning is that we don't want the module to constantly keep trying to extend the session while the user is idle or times out.

Yes, you can get the behavior you desire by turning off automatic keepalive management from $idle, and start $keepalive manually. Excerpt of your app's config and run:
