What do you mean, this is the plugin repo
EDIT: I fixed it by specifying which model should populate the values within the populate options.
I could make a PR but it was kinda of an overhaul (it still passes the tests tho)

Can you please open this issue on https://github.com/mongodb-js/mongoose-autopopulate? That sounds more like an issue with the plugin.

The PR is missing some unit tests, however this issue seems to be caused by mongoose, not the plugin.
Shouldnt Document#populate handle array fields correctly if the model isnt specified?

Since coverage is still 100% I'd say its fine. Either way, it was an issue of the plugin not providing the correct option to mongoose, which you could throw in an integration test for.
