I too had this issue with GCC6 on Debian Stretch. #define ADT_WORKAROUND 1 worked for compilation, but as you mentioned, it seems to be an inelegant solution.

There are a number of similar C++ standard issues in other parts of the system (some of them in Boost, on which Mitsuba depends). For now, I think defining the ADT_WORKAROUND is the best way to go. Medium term, I plan to push out a modernized version of Mitsuba v1 with a working cross-platform CMake build system. Longer term, a complete C++14 rewrite of Mitsuba is on the horizon (but this will still take a while until feature-complete).
