Is that a really old Rails version? As far as I know, returning
was in Rails since the very early versions. Can you reproduce the issues in a blank Rails app that's of the same version as this one?

I've got the same issue in a freshly set up edge rails3 application using the current rails3-branch auf will_paginate:

Your stack trace clearly comes comes from the will_paginate 2.3.14 gem, not edge "rails3" branch from git. The 2.3.x version isn't compatible with Rails 3, you have to use the branch.
