The API hasn't really changed in a backwards-incompatible way in quite some time now, and I intend to try hard to keep it that way. The one bigger change that involves API design decisions is #12.
Other than that, I can't really make any promises, besides always accepting good patches. But with projects like this with only single developer, you'll always run the risk that no work is being done for a couple months, or a dev putting his own needs above good project management. You should always be prepared to fork off if it becomes necessary.
That said, an asset management tool probably isn't going to be a core component of your app, so it should be comparitively easy to switch it out.
