It's intentional.

Here in the UK, numbers are not used in that form. It seems though that in some areas of the world, e.g. the US, the forms e.g. .1 and 1. are commonly used. I would appreciate it if someone could confirm or give further detail about this.

As, in response to similar feedback, I recently changed big.js to allow such values, I may do the same here.

I'm not sure how common leading and trailing decimal points are in the US. I don't use them. But I also don't consider that format to be invalid. A real user reported the issue when our code failed to handle that input. So there are some people who consider it an acceptable format. I think accountants might use that format more than anyone else. If there are no downsides to handling this type of input, it would be nicer to have the library handle it than custom normalization code. I had to check the input and append a 0 as needed. I could imagine other people might have the same issue.
