No, I think you are complicating things more than they need to be. The entire websocket exchange with a client happens in a single request, so you can authenticate your client when it connects, and then save state to the user session, which will be accessible throughout the entire websocket communication. The only limitation here is that any regular HTTP requests sent will not see changes to the user session made by the websocket handlers. This is explained in the documentation.
