As an MDI app, you can do this already, but it's not as elegant as that of macOS, I admit.

Midnight Commander is a Unix console program, so it is really clunky and can't have good integration with Windows. The one major thing missing in Windows from OSX would be custom preview, i.e. OSX file manager calls say Photoshop to provide preview for its *.psd files. There are really ugly ad-hoc methods, like users have to install separate code pack, instead of Photoshop providing previews for its files.

Bash was running on Windows for a very long time. IIRC, there were several different implementations of Unix subsystem for Windows since Windows NT first appeared. I don't really like that idea, because all Linux desktop standards are completely broken beyond repair: for many years they keep fighting each other, instead of hiring an expert in the field and allowing him to design a good standard, like Microsoft did with NTFS, which works like a charm since then. But in Linux you have a myriad of filesystems, none of which work properly, maybe because they are developed by crazy people like Hans Reiser, who murdered his wife and now, serving prison time, accepts donations to "clone" her.

Umm, I wasn't talking a about the Linux desktop. I was talking about WSL and the ability to run bash and other Linux APPS themselves natively on Windows. You aren't running Linux. You are running the actual applications that run on Linux in Windows 10. This is just the latest and best for of the NT's subsystem tech, as you referred to above.

You won't be running a desktop environment. You will be using the native Windows shell and the Windows kernel. You won't use a myriad of file systems. You will be using NTFS. There is zero Linux code in here.

My point was running Midnight commander, as designed for Linux, running natively on windows and integrating well with the OS.

You can just open a second window and tile the windows vertically (Shift+F4). You can copy files with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Tab (to switch window) and Ctrl+V.

That are some Emacs-tier shortcuts.

I don't remember there were norton commander style managers for OSX at all. Still wonder why the concept died with DOS, because pressing F5 is much faster than pressing ctrl-c, switching to other window and pressing ctrl-v, or dragging with mouse between windows (frequently people mess up the dragging and files end up being moved to desktop or in the wrong folder!).

Sorry, I was referring to the dual panel of Finder. I meant that this file manager's dual panel isn't as elegant as Finder's. File explorer in windows doesn't really have dual panel do finder was the closest "competitor" I compared with.

As for Norton commander, midnight commander, an free software port of Norton Commander, will work great on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Well, are you forgetting that bash and Linux apps and programs can now run natively on Windows? I am curious to give Midnight Commander a shot today.

Since Linux apps and programs run natively on Windows, a lot of integrations are possible that, otherwise would be very hard to achieve in a VM or emulation:
-launch windows executables directly from the Linux shell, such as bash
-launch bash directly on any directory. Go to a folder in file exploerer, click file, open PowerShell here, type bash (or another installed Linux distro like fedora or kali) and you will launch bash at that very directory. You can open midnight commander in that directory by launching the app.

we would be able to create a script that automatically launches bash and then Midnight Commander at a specific directory, create a shortcut to the script, give it an icon on the desktop, and boom, you have the "app" available for launching right from the desktop!

For Windows I recommend FarManager.
