In general cases where the underlying objects and metadata (underlying function pointers, reflection, etc.) are all big enough, the code generation is slightly different from the virtual keyword. See 4.1.3 Implementation in P3086 for more details.

In the cases where the underlying objects or the metadata is small, the code generation is usually better than the virtual keyword. make_proxy will automatically adopt SBO (small buffer optimization) and avoid heap allocation when possible. #71 was one of our recent improvements that added support for inlining of virtual table when applicable, which may also improve code generation and runtime performance.
