Additional use-case: Mobile devices. Since the add-on now runs on battery-powered mobile devices, polling database-updates as only means to update the db is probably not a good idea.

Some possibilities for GUI / service sync:

E.g. use three database fields (or Kodi-API settings fields):

• timestamp (exists already)
• update_frequency (a replica of settings.xml into database, allows dynamic change of settings, if set to 0, no automatic updates)
• command: 0: nothing (default), 1: initiate db update, 2: re-read database config (some major config change)

GUI would write those fields on demand, service would poll them.

Examples:

A button <update database> in database info would simply set the command-field to 1.
Service would poll that, on read it would reset the command to 0 and initiate a database update.

Option 'update database at start' would simply cause the GUI on start to set command to 1.
