On RHEL when I include the role I do something like this:
- name: Configure instance
hosts: all
roles:
- role: ansible-consul
consul_is_server: true
consul_is_ui: true
consul_install_dnsmasq: true
consul_install_consulate: true
consul_datacenter: "{{ region }}"
consul_bootstrap: false
consul_node_name: "{{ inventory_hostname }}"
consul_use_systemd: false
consul_use_upstart: false
consul_use_initd: true
consul_ui_server_port: 8086
consul_join_at_start: true
nginx_user: nginx
That seems to work for me.

@jimbydamonk: it works but I still think it's an issue - we shouldn't have to know the username that nginx runs under in a playbook, and your example would fail if you had a mixed bag of RedHat and Ubuntu hosts.
@savagegus: geerlingguy's nginx role claims to support both Debian and RedHat - is it still necessary to use franklinkim's nginx role?
from ansible-consul.
I would like to understand why the franklinkim.nginx role is processed at all such that it sets the nginx_user value. Isn't the whole point of the conditional on the dependency that it only runs IF the OS family is Debian?
from ansible-consul.
Well, that didn't take me long to figure out why.
Basically a conditional on a role dependency just adds a conditional to every task in that role, so it doesn't prevent vars and other things from getting set. Not really what you would think would happen. Please go to the issue and vote!
