Is that your actual password? Try using one without '$' in it - it might be trying to do substitutions in the shell. I also get issues with 'pa$$word' but with 'password' it works fine.

Changing the password to a purely alphanumeric one did not affect the outcome, sadly :(

Hey - I think I fixed it. I was testing on the same server over and over again and it wasn't updating the /root/.my.cnf file like it should have been. I uninstalled everything and deleted that file and poof - works.
