Currently these states are set by adding special class names:

    //Boolean attributes that can be set with equivalent class names in the LI tags
    CLASS_ATTRS = "active expanded focus folder lazy selected unselectable".split(" "),

so try:

<li class="selected">

instead.

Using data-selected="true" will result in node.data.selected = true (which will not select).
In order to select we would need node.selected = true instead.
I'll modify this issue's title in order to reflect this.

Thanks, this definitely makes sense.

In general, I would prefer setting the options not by classes but a special attribute, let it be for example data-fancytree-attributes="selected". Class names are always a bit problematic as they can collide with some css definitions. But data-selected="true" is also good (as far as nobody needs node.data.selected in their own use).
