Format never shows any percentage done about diskslaw

Hi,

It sounds like it was using ATA Secure Erase, as part of this it will set the drive password to 'pass'. Typically firmware will pad this with some bytes if you were to attempt to unlock this at boot.

Some drives such as mechanical drives using secure erase will take several hours, the progress bar currently shows only percentage of drives done, so if there is just one large mechanical/HDD it will go from 0% after several hours to 100%.

The easiest way to unlock it is to boot a linux distro with hdparm (RipLinux for example) and run something like the below in a root terminal
hdparm --user-master u --security-disable pass /dev/sda

Booting Diskslaw and letting it finish will wiping also unlock the drive.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I did some more looking through the distro files on GitHub and did try ‘pass’ but unfortunately it did not accept this. I did attempt to boot back to diskslaw however it would always ask for the HDD Password even though I had the USB device selected to boot from. I will try the method you have suggested. Thanks again!

I just wanted to alert you that in my case with the lock on the hard drive on my toshiba laptop, you cannot boot to another device to unlock or finish the formatting of the hard drive. Eve if you exclude the hard drive from the system, the BIOS still challenges you for the password. Possibly forcing a BIOS reset may remove this. That could only be accomplished by disassembling the laptop. In this case, it’s not worth the effort but hoping others don’t get stung with this. Roger.
