I simply followed the docs. It's Debian 9 x86_64 with xfs filesystem running on a vServer.

According to the doc I should use aufs (because xfs with ftype=0). Would this help?

Probably because of xfs. Try overlayfs. Don’t know if it will work on xfs though.

According to different sources overlay is not supported by xfs with type=0. And aufs is not available in my kernel anymore. So there seems to be no way to use a better storage driver at the moment.

EDIT:
OK, got aufs working. Looks much better now:

2,9G	/var/lib/docker

But I think a note about the storage driver would be helpful for some users.
