One other option, that would introduce less breaking changes for clients would be to encode messages and data in the websocket data argument in the format, "[:]". The JSON encoded data would be optional and supplied to the websocket handler if provided.
I think I'll take this approach as it seems like a good balance between adding data and keeping the API reasonable on the client.
Also, what are you thoughts on exposing an implementation of the Socket to the client? Any interest?
