I never used MySQL for spatial data. As far as I remember, MySQL doesn't support geographic types. I suggest you to use Geometric type (If you want to calculate the distance from a point to a linestring, this is enough, if you choose the appropriate CRS(srid).
The geometry data type supports planar, or Euclidean (flat-earth) data. The geometry data type both conforms to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The geography data type, on the other hand, stores ellipsoidal (round-earth) data, such as GPS latitude and longitude coordinates.
Geometric type : The geometric type is a flexible data type that can be used to store a wide variety of geometries, including points, lines, polygons, surfaces, and volumes. The coordinates stored in a geometric type are expressed in a CRS, which is a coordinate system defined by a set of parameters, such as the projection, origin, and scale.
Geographic type : The geographic type is a specialized data type for storing coordinates in a GCS. A GCS is a coordinate system defined by a globe, such as the Earth. The coordinates stored in a geographic type are expressed in degrees of latitude and longitude, which are angular measurements of the globe.
