Aha, now that I actually got an alert email to go through, it included a URL to the monitor using "expand" where I can edit and stuff. Is there a link to this on the interface that I am missing?

If you click the monitor's title it will expand into edit view.

Aha! That was not obvious :)

Any suggestions on a more obvious approach?

Well, I assumed that the gear would send me to the configure/edit screen. That's where I would put that link.

Interesting... we'll have to think through that. I will say that the functionality behind the gear now is more informational than config, with the exception of resetting the monitor which you could argue should go in the settings tab of the monitor in expanded view.
