Does the gallery in question have "External Embedding" set to "Off" in the gallery settings? This is the most common cause for the behaviour you are seeing.

If it does, you'll need to use the $f->signResource() method for each of the URL links if you don't want to enable external links.

An example of this usage can be found in this gist.

In the example, the unsigned image if first and shouldn't show and the second is the signed and should show. Keep in mind that you may see it the other way round if you're logged into SmugMug at the time of testing so make sure you test in an incognito window or ensure you're logged out.
