@jengelh can you explain more what you're trying to accomplish and your configuration. Did you try a combination of --with-pyprefix=no and --with-pythondir3 ?

openSUSE ships with multiple Python versions (and Ruby too, but that's a different field) simultaneously. When producing distro packages, the build recipe executes a loop with configure;make or python setup.py commands for a set of Python versions.

But what am I to pass to --with-pythondir3? They're all living in /usr.

$ python3.8-config --prefix
/usr
$ python3.9-config --prefix
/usr
$ python3.10-config --prefix
/usr

Ah in that case try e.g. PYTHON_VERSION=3.8 ./configure --enable-python this will tell configure to use python3.8-config to determine the necessary Python settings.
