maybe some sort of layering? so a user could dismiss a warning or else have time to copy an error msg to send as
a bug report before getting back to the base layer with the core information of relevant application state. just a thought...

This has been effectively done with the move to source specific alerts within each viewer. See commits 94cefd8 and 31e4483 for examples. Closing.
