read "#hiddenfield"
should give you the text/value depending on what kind of element it is.

If you want to assign it to a value you can do
let text = read "#hiddenfield"

If you do

"#hiddenfield" == "value" it will read the elements text/value and do an assertion.

Does this help?

Yes. Exactly what I was looking for.

Is there some way I can help you with this? Can I add to the documentation somehow to make the things I'm learning easier for you and for the next guys along?

Maybe you can move the examples to the Wiki and I can add things there.

I've never used a github wiki, but sounds good.

You can clone it from here and send pull requests
