Try the unquote function:

body {
    @test: #FF00FF;
    filter: unquote("DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr={@test}00, endColorstr=#FFFFFF00)");
}

It lets you turn a string into raw output. Combined with the ability to inline variables into a string, you shouldn't have to hardcode anything.

I actually just pushed a fix for an issue with strings containing { in values of @ properties. You might want to grab it.

Actually in filter it is #aarrggbb - which is even more confusing... So it would more likely be startColorstr=00{@test}
